Actor Sam Rockwell is preparing to headline a fresh New York staging of Arthur Miller's enduring play, "A View from the Bridge." This production sees Rockwell taking on the pivotal role of Eddie, supported by Marin Ireland as Beatrice and Alfred Molina as Alfieri, under the direction of Neil Pepe. Beyond his acting duties, Rockwell is also a producer for the show, collaborating with Mark Berger, with performances scheduled at La MaMa's Ellen Stewart Theatre.
The play is slated for a 13-week run, commencing on November 27 and officially opening on December 13. Bringing a high-profile commercial production to La MaMa, a venue recognized for its experimental works and dedication to showcasing underrepresented artists, is an uncommon decision. However, this move is driven by Rockwell's deep connection to the theater and a commitment to drawing more attention to the non-profit organization.
Rockwell expressed his sentiments, stating, "Some of my earliest theatrical memories involve visiting La MaMa as a child, spending time backstage while my mother was involved in experimental theater. Returning to the Ellen Stewart Theatre with Arthur Miller's masterpiece, alongside these exceptional collaborators, feels like a full circle moment. My career began downtown, and institutions like La MaMa have consistently inspired me, both as an artist and an audience member. They are the essence of our cultural landscape, championing bold new voices and reinforcing the significance of live theater. I've always considered myself fortunate, and this opportunity feels predestined."
"A View from the Bridge" first premiered Off-Broadway in 1965 at the Sheridan Square Playhouse, featuring Robert Duvall and Jon Voight, directed by Ulu Grosbard with Dustin Hoffman as assistant director. The play has since enjoyed multiple runs on Broadway and in the West End, with its most recent Broadway revival in 2015, directed by Ivo van Hove.
The narrative centers on Eddie Carbone, a longshoreman residing in Brooklyn with his wife, Beatrice. His intense, unhealthy fascination with Beatrice's teenage niece, Catherine, ultimately leads to the family's tragic downfall. A lawyer named Alfieri recounts Eddie's descent.
Rockwell's last stage appearance was in "American Buffalo" on Broadway in 2022, also directed by Pepe. The creative team for "A View from the Bridge" includes scenic design by Scott Pask, costume design by Sarah Laux, lighting design by John Torres, and sound design by Palmer Hefferan.
