The Last Ecclesiastical Tailor in Rome for Popes and Cardinals
With a tape measure around his neck and a thimble on his finger, Raniero Mancinelli, an 86-year-old Italian, is dedicated to creating exquisite ecclesiastical garments. His shop on the Borgo Pio, just a stone's throw from the Vatican, is a haven for those seeking traditional and timeless tailoring.

The Importance of Trust and Attention to Detail

Mancinelli takes great pride in his work, emphasizing the significance of trust between him and his clients. "It takes two or three days to make an outfit: taking the measurements, cutting it out, and putting it all together," he explains. His hands move with precision as he works on a black cassock with red piping destined for a Catholic cardinal. Each detail is carefully considered, depending on the client's location, climate, and financial means.

His bushy black eyebrows move animatedly above rectangular glasses as he describes the process. He knows exactly what to do to ensure that each garment is not only beautiful but also functional and comfortable.

The shop is filled with gold chalices, embroidered headdresses, signet rings, and rosaries with gleaming crucifixes. These items are a testament to the quality and craftsmanship that Mancinelli brings to his work.

The Ceremony and the Orders

Mancinelli has been working flat out in preparation for a ceremony on December 7, where 21 new cardinals will be made. A third of those being elevated by Pope Francis have placed orders with the tailor. This is a significant moment in the Catholic Church, and Mancinelli is honored to be a part of it.

He understands the importance of this occasion and the role that his tailoring plays in it. Each garment is a symbol of the Church's traditions and values, and he takes great care in creating them.

The work he does is not just about sewing together pieces of fabric; it is about preserving a centuries-old tradition and passing it on to future generations.

The Craftsmanship and the Materials

Mancinelli's expertise lies in his use of high-quality materials and his attention to detail. The black cassock with red piping is made from the finest fabrics, and every stitch is carefully placed.

He selects the materials based on their durability and beauty, ensuring that each garment will last for years to come. The gold chalices and other items in the shop are also made with the utmost care and attention to detail.

His craftsmanship is evident in every aspect of his work, from the stitching to the finishing touches. He takes pride in creating pieces that are not only functional but also works of art.
